{"id":740,"date":"2021-02-13T10:32:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-13T10:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hybritdevelopment.se\/?page_id=740"},"modified":"2023-09-13T14:51:44","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T12:51:44","slug":"a-fossil-free-future","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hybritdevelopment.yoursuniverse.se\/en\/a-fossil-free-future\/","title":{"rendered":"A fossil-free future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HYBRIT will revolutionize the iron and steel industry.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssab.com\/company\/sustainability\/sustainable-operations\/hybrit\">SSAB<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lkab.com\/en\/about-lkab\/technological-and-process-development\/research-collaborations\/hybrit--for-fossil-free-steel\/\">LKAB<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/group.vattenfall.com\/what-we-do\/roadmap-to-fossil-freedom\/industry-decarbonisation\/hybrit\">Vattenfall<\/a> have started HYBRIT (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) to develop a fossil-free value chain for iron and steel production using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen, thus minimizing the carbon dioxide emissions throughout the value chain. The HYBRIT technology involves replacing the blast furnace process, which uses carbon and coke to remove the oxygen from iron ore, with a direct reduction process where we use fossil-free hydrogen produced from water using electricity from fossil-free energy sources. Instead of carbon dioxide, water vapor is formed. We are thus creating the world&#8217;s first fossil-free reduction of iron ore to give sponge iron, a central step for fossil-free iron and steel production. Success requires research, development and cooperation.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation and cooperation<\/h2>\n<p>The Swedish iron and steel industry is already climate-efficient by international standards, but that\u2019s not enough. For this reason, the HYBRIT initiative was started by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hybritdevelopment.se\/en\/a-fossil-free-future\/the-strength-of-working-together\/\">SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall,<\/a> receiving financial support from the Swedish Energy Agency and EU&#8217;s Innovationfund for different parts of the initiative. The goal is a unified, unique value chain, from mine to fossil-free steel. The steel industry currently accounts for about ten percent of Sweden&#8217;s carbon dioxide emissions and seven percent of the global emissions.
